BBQ Grills at Residential Homes, Apartments, and Condos
Every year thousands of costly and sometimes deadly fires occur due to the use of BBQ Grills being used on balconies. These fires are usually caused by improper disposal of charcoal or malfunctioning propane equipment that causes a fire to start. These fires spread quickly, often undetected, and may threaten lives. The Cimarron Hills Fire District operates under the 2015 International Fire Code. It is the responsibility of occupants and building management/ownership to stay in compliance with the codes of open-flame cooking devices such as charcoal, natural gas, and propane grills
Charcoal grills and other open-flame cooking devices shall not be used on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction.
Exceptions:
✓ Propane grills with a cylinder up to 1 pound are allowed.
✓ If your building AND balcony are protected by sprinklers
✓ Grills of all types are unrestricted at single-family homes. However, the 10-foot separation is recommended.
